A bit about the role:

We’re growing so much at the office that we’re opening a new office in Wellington! You’d be joining our newly established Wellington team, and you’d start your journey at Aware with a 2-week long induction in Hamilton to get to meet our team and learn about how we work.

We’re expecting to have this team start on the 4th of October, in time to be inducted and start in our brand-spanking-new office when it opens on 18 October 2021.

Although physically separate, this role (along with other technical team members based in Wellington) will work as a part of our Development Services team. We’re looking to have 3 other Engineers, a Senior Project Manager, and a member of our Commercial (sales) team based from the Wellington Office to start with.

This opportunity is specifically for an experienced Data Platform Engineer to join the team who has strong experience in cloud platform data engineering. If wrangling big data, building data pipelines and data platforms to house that data is of interest, then this role is for you.

Our Data Platform Engineers are responsible for the development and delivery of data transformation solutions for our clients. Not only will you get to work with customers to identify and scope out their needs, but you’ll get the satisfaction of leading the project through to successful completion too (then being able to stand back and show off your shiny creation!).

We run a lot of workshops, hacks, and sprints where we get to find creative new ways to apply emerging (and tried and trusty) technologies to customers’ business problems, so it’s important that you have the confidence and communication skills to think on your feet while presenting.

At Aware Group, being a Senior Engineer means being comfortable thinking on your feet and working directly with clients to workshop and build solutions that meet their needs. This requires strong communication and confidence skills as well as an understanding of the SDLC.

Our clients are often taking the first step on their data transformation journey in the cloud and require leadership and technical skills to enable their business to leverage modern practices such as AI/ML. This position is perfect for an engineer who can work collaboratively to deliver robust outcomes using the latest data platform technologies.

We have a focus on providing quality to our clients, so delivering well-tested maintainable solutions is important to us, along with the ability to identify, resolve, and escalate to the Project Manager where a solution is not delivering value or when issues arise.

Aware has a close partnership with Microsoft in delivering demonstrations both for existing and upcoming technologies; in this role you will learn new frameworks and communicate on a technical level with Microsoft product teams.

As this role will involve consulting directly with customers and partners, some international and domestic travel may be requested from time to time (once it’s safe to again).

We encourage you to apply if you have:

  • Either:
    • 2+ years experience developing data pipelines and platforms, or
    • 7+ years experience as a Back End Developer with exposure to data.
  • Experience working Microsoft Azure Data Services products.
  • Experience with querying and programming languages (e.g. SQL, Python Spark, Scala), and a keen willingness to learn emerging languages.
  • A highly organised approach to your work with the ability to prioritise effectively and work across multiple projects at once.
  • Outstanding personal management skills, with the ability to self-manage.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to workshop ideas directly with groups of customers from around the world, to coach other team members and to proactively identify and flag if yourself or other team members are heading off track.
  • Demonstrated strong emotional intelligence with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders to deliver robust and scalable solutions.
  • An interest in further developing your skillset to be T-shaped (develop technical skills outside of your area of expertise that compliment your strengths).
  • Ability to explain technical solutions to non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and share those learnings.
  • Have previous experience working in a consulting environment.
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to bring together knowledge spanning a wide variety of technologies to deliver solutions.

 

It would be ideal if you also have:

  • Have experience with exposing data for reporting purposes (SSIS, PowerBI, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Snowflake etc.).
  • Have prior understanding/exposure to various applications of AI and Machine Learning.
